Please join us on October 26th, 2011 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm at Draker Laboratories for a presentation and discussion on Behavior Driven Development: An introduction to automated testing for web developers, by Pete Brown, lead web developer for Draker Laboratories.

BDD is not about testing code. It is about changing the way you develop software, providing shorter feedback cycles, driving better design. This discussion will provide working examples using Ruby, Rails, Cucumber, and Rspec to answer questions like:

What is automated testing? TDD? BDD?

Why should I test?

When and What should I test?

What should I not be testing?

Why is testing hard sometimes?

What is the difference between acceptance and unit tests? Cucumber and Rspec?

Feel free to BYOB.

If you have any questions, please contact Adam ( adam at agilionapps.com ). Hope to see you there.

Hi,

It is seems to me that there’s a handful of active Rails developers in the Burlington area. And based on the Code Camp presentation audience, there’s also a potential of about a dozen of people who have interest to learn more about this technology.

Do we want to make an effort to restart regular meetings (may be semi-monthly)?

Also, Dan Coutu, that came to the Rails presentation last Saturday, mentioned an idea of virtual meetings. He lives in the north-east of Vermont and would not be able to come otherwise. I do not have a ready solution, but it seems to me that Skype video for conference calls and some form of desktop sharing for presenter is available and we could piece this together, if it would create much more traction than meeting in person.

Looking forward to your comments!

Need to put your code into Subversion so it can be deployed using Capistrano. I’ll show you how to do that using the RadRails/aptana IDE and a bit of the command line on a PC using Instant Rails.

Need to select a host. Should it be shared, virtual or dedicated? What hosting service do you want to use? Do you want to do it in-house? How do you decide?

Depending upon the host, should you freeze the gems? Are there other things that should be done before the first deploy? (What about the passwords in the production log file?)

Production chores include daily (or more often) backup and rotating log files. How to use CRON to help with these chores.

Looking forward to seeing everyone.

Cheers,

Sergei and Jan want your input on planning our next meeting. We know that the summer may not be the best time but want to keep the Rails train moving. Everybody, please, register and put your preferred dates, times and locations in the comments to this post, so we all can find a good time for everybody to get together.

Is there interest in a July meeting? What should we discuss / present? Jan has just deployed his first Rails app at TextDrive on a shared server. He’d be happy to talk about getting it up and running. He has been looking at other hosting sites but has not made a decision about what to do. The web site carbonfreedom.org generates pdf documents, users PayPal and the goldberg framework / plug-in. He’d be happy to talk about that as well.

Or, should we get together for a brew at the VT Pub and Brewery and just check in and meet more informally? They have some of the best beer in the US and on a week night is fairly quiet.
